Trying to be White

Don’t you just hate being accused of trying to be White? It happens to me every Monday morning. “Ooh, you speak English so poshly, you listen to Radio 4, you like British Rock ‘n’ Roll and have never listened to Umm Kulthum. You even look White.”

And it doesn’t stop there. “Ooh you’re engaged to an English man, you’re a feminist, you reject religion, you don’t bash gays. Who do you think you are? You have an inferiority complex and want to be accepted by your White colonial masters. But you’ll never be one of them. Woe betide us that we should ever accept the White man’s decadent values. However, we do love the colour of their skin- isn’t it lovely? How unfortunate you didn’t inherit your mother’s blue eyes.”
